Taos Plaza Gazebo Construction Update
November 6-13, 2025 - A summary of the work progress to date was provided by R&M Construction; which included a recap of critical work sequencing and a standard safety outline. There were no accidents to report, and safety remains a point of emphasis shared by all construction personnel involved in the project. This included work involving laborers atop the roof of the main structure.*
Renovations to the Taos Plaza gazebo are nearing completion, with above-grade changes to the gazebo itself, and improvements to the surrounding areas receiving their respective final touches. The majority of work that has taken place since the beginning of November has been the installation of pavers on stairways and around planters. Due to the many odd angles, round pathways and new railings, a great deal of time has been spent measuring and cutting bricks. Where needed (such as stairs, sitting areas, miscellaneous edges and atop newly built tree planters), the pavers have been secured to concrete surfaces with adhesives; while other landings and walking areas have been leveled, compacted and sanded. Other major aspects of the renovation, including: total roof replacement, total electrical system revamp, sidewalk modernizations and A.D.A. enhancements have been finalized and are as visually dazzling as they are functional. One conspicuous feature about the overall makeover is the increase of iron (wrought iron) railing added throughout the project – strategically placed for added safety and accentuation. A few aspects of the renovation remain unfinished, and will require additional time and resources before being declared fully complete. These are listed below.
Demolition of the subterranean rooms below the gazebo is complete, however, electrical upgrades, repairs to the ceiling and doorways; and drywall installation is still ongoing. And although plumbing fixtures are still visible and accessible in the two larger rooms (formerly used as restrooms at some point in the past), it has been reiterated that the spaces will no longer be used as such. Thus, the extent of the modifications planned for the basement will be made with storage in mind – and will be built accordingly. Concrete pedestals for three new decorative lights have been poured and are ready to be connected to the new power grid. The lampposts themselves have not arrived (as of the publication of this report), but according to the lead contractor, they are in transit and should be here soon – and installed as soon as possible.
Aspects of Phase II change orders were listed and an update on their status was discussed. Change orders include: installation of handrail(s) to stairwell to subterranean rooms below gazebo; and additional wrought iron fences and handrails placed in susceptible areas. * - In addition to a final corrugated metal covering installed on the large gazebo, a much smaller kiosk (which serves as an information booth located near the southeast corner of the plaza) also received a matching cap.
